Emotional IQ – Know Yours

emotionalintelligence

Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include three skills: emotional awareness; the ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem solving; and the ability to manage emotions, which includes regulating your own emotions and cheering up or calming down other people.

Now this detailed definition can be broken down quite simply; your emotional intelligence is the skill you exercise when dealing with all matters emotional. It’s how you process and act on your emotions and the emotions of others. Many will think that they do this everyday, all day with no problem but in reality just like academic intelligence (book smarts) and life intelligence (common sense/street smarts) very few have gotten to a level of mastery.

Everything in life is a delicate balance and your emotional IQ is no different; as illustrated above, your emotional intelligence is comprised of 5 major components. All the components are needed for a healthy balance but knowing your levels is essential for your growth and development.

Just like you go to school, read books and research various topics throughout your life in order to accumulate basic intelligence; you must feed your emotional intelligence as well.

Here’s a test to help you along.
